One bright and sunny day, Jesus sat on a soft green hill. Around Him, thousands of people were sitting on the grass. They had come to listen to Jesus because He told wonderful stories about God’s love. The sun warmed their faces, and the gentle breeze made the leaves dance happily.

As Jesus talked, the people listened very carefully. They felt peaceful and happy inside, like when you hug your best friend. But after a long time, Jesus looked at the crowd and saw something important. The people were very hungry! They had walked a long way and had no food to eat.

Jesus asked His friend Philip, “Where can we buy bread for all these people to eat?” Philip looked around and said, “Even if we worked for many days, we would not have enough money to buy food for everyone!” Jesus smiled gently and said, “We will see what God can do.”

Then Jesus asked another friend, Andrew, “Do you have any food?” Andrew said, “There is a little boy here with five small pieces of bread and two fish. But that is not enough for so many people.” Jesus took the bread and fish, and He looked up to heaven. He thanked God for the food.

Jesus began to break the bread and fish into pieces. Then He gave the pieces to His friends to share with the crowd. Something amazing happened! The food kept multiplying, like magic! Everyone ate as much as they wanted. No one was hungry anymore. The people were so surprised and happy. Their eyes sparkled like stars!

After everyone had eaten, Jesus told His friends to gather the leftover pieces. They filled twelve big baskets! Jesus showed everyone that God can do wonderful things, even when things seem impossible.

The people felt joyful and thankful. They said, “Jesus is very special! He cares about us and loves us so much!” Jesus smiled with love and said, “God’s love is like this food—it never runs out.”

The sun began to set, painting the sky with pink and orange colors. The crowd went home with happy hearts, knowing that Jesus is always with them, ready to help and care.

John 6:1–14

John 6:1–14 (ICB)

After these things, Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. A large crowd followed Him because they saw the miracles He did by healing sick people.

Jesus went up on a mountain, and there He sat with His followers. It was almost the time for the Jewish Passover.

Jesus looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward Him. He said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread so these people can eat?”

Jesus said this to test Philip because He already knew what He was going to do.

Philip answered, “Two hundred silver coins would not be enough to buy bread for each one to have a little.”

One of Jesus’ followers, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two small fish. But what are they for so many people?”

Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was a lot of grass in that place, so the people sat down. The number of people was about five thousand men.
