Ash Wednesday – A Time to Repent

A long time ago, God’s people learned something very important. They learned that sometimes, they make mistakes. These mistakes are called sin. Sin means doing things that are not good or that make God sad. But God loves us very much and wants us to say sorry when we do wrong.

One special day is called Ash Wednesday. On this day, people remember that we need to ask God to forgive us. They put ashes on their foreheads. Ashes are tiny bits of burnt wood or plants. The ashes look like dust, and they remind us that we are small and need God’s help every day.

When the ashes are put on the forehead, the person says, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” This means that our bodies will not last forever, but God’s love is forever. It helps us remember to be kind and to follow God’s ways.

The Bible tells us in the book of Joel that God wants us to turn back to Him. This means to stop doing wrong and to start doing what is right. Joel said, “Return to me with all your heart.” This is called repentance. It means feeling sorry for the bad things and wanting to do better.

Repenting is like cleaning a dirty window. When the window is dirty, it is hard to see through. But when we clean it, the sunshine comes in and makes everything bright and happy. When we say sorry to God, He cleans our hearts and fills us with His love.

Sometimes, people feel sad when they think about their mistakes. But God is happy when we say sorry. He forgives us and gives us a fresh start. It is like when a flower grows again after the rain. God’s forgiveness helps us grow and be strong.

On Ash Wednesday, we remember that God loves us no matter what. He wants us to come close to Him and be friends forever. We can pray and say, “God, I am sorry for my mistakes. Please help me to do what is right.” Then, God’s peace fills our hearts like a warm hug.

Isn’t it wonderful to know that God always listens? Even when we feel small like the ashes on our forehead, God’s love is big and never ends. We can always come to Him and say sorry. He will always forgive us and help us shine bright like the sun.

“But even now,” says the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.”

“Tear your hearts, and not your clothes. Return to the Lord your God, because he is kind and merciful. He is slow to become angry and full of love. He is ready to forgive.”
